6.2 X4 CTD quite often (X4 has stopped responding)

Post by Trooper170 » Thu, 2. May 24, 19:55

So ever since I moved over to my new computer build this has been happening, X4 has been crashing quite often, sometimes during attempting to save, but sometimes for no reason at all when just sitting there and the game is paused or in menu, or sitting there at normal speed. It could go hours and play fine, or it could crash in less than hour of loading up. Sometimes it crashes right when I try to open the game and I have to try again.
I would appreciate any help with troubleshooting this issue, as it's becoming difficult to play as usual.

You've got a real mixed bag of crashes there, some coming from the game and some from drivers. The ones coming from the game are also from a variety of places, at least some of which are unlikely to be caused by the game itself.

Start by verifying your installation of the game, and make sure you're playing without any mods installed until you're sure everything is stable. You should also ensure that nothing on your system is overclocked or overvolted, and that the timings on your memory are not set too tightly. Performing a full memory test would be wise and, if you're able to, also test your power supply.

-Game installation has been verified by steam with no issues;
-Not playing with any mods - vanilla only;
-Windows Memory Diagnostic came back good;
-No overclock running on CPU, in fact I've enforced intel's Power limits for the 14900k using latest asus bios update - The ram is running at 6400mhz with default supplied timings as advertised on the box, but I can step that back to see if it helps;
-Power Supply was itself a fresh RMA that tested good on my other system, it's possible there was an issue with the refurb they sent me, if unlikely.

-I've got a ticket open with Intel for a separate issue, and I just got a message back. They seem to think that my CPU may be defective, Might we see these kinds of issues with a CPU that isn't operating correctly? Will go through the RMA process in the coming weeks, to scratch that off the list of possibilities. The i9 14900 series is powerful, but they seem to be having some issues lately from a search of various forums.

If you have any ideas for how to tackle the potential driver issues, I can get started with reinstalling relevant files.
I appreciate all the suggestions!

The driver crashes don't necessarily mean there's a problem with the drivers themselves. It could be similar to some of the game crashes, where the crash is just a symptom of something that's actually elsewhere. That said, it's always worth doing a clean graphics driver install after running something like DDU, just to be sure. I'd also recommend updating your Realtek sound drivers from their site, and uninstalling your LG and Acer sound drivers unless you desperately need them.

"The ram is running at 6400mhz with default supplied timings as advertised on the box, but I can step that back to see if it helps"

That might be worth a try.. I found even the slightest messing with memory timings when I was trying to optimise my rig caused similar problems as you are having with X4 so I stick with the default XMP setting which I assume you are using anyway and should work as advertised. Good luck getting it solved.
