Post by shadowraid5 » Fri, 27. Sep 13, 12:36

A couple days ago i got the humble bundle so i can play. It was working that night when i downloaded it but now it keeps crashing after i go to start into a game. I've tried looking around and i tried asking the steam forums and nothing is helping. hopefully i can get help here.

You may indeed be able to get some help here, but you have to help us to help you. The very first thread in this forum tells you the information you need to provide us with to have any real hope of being able to solve any of the problems you are having. The most important parts are the DXDiag report, which game(s) you are trying to start, and what errors you are getting when they crash.

Oh and by the way please don't say it's due to graphics or sound drivers. I say this for 2 reasons:
1) i can't update my drivers for some reason my computer won't let me
2) i already ruled those out because the game was working fine 2 days ago

Well your drivers are extremely out of date, pre-dating Windows 7 SP1, so they could well be part of the problem. If your PC won't let you update them then there is clearly something wrong. Do you perhaps not have administrator rights?

Drivers aside, you do also have a number of known problem codecs which you maybe installed since it last worked. The ones that jump out of the list are the CyberLink and MainConcept ones, and these will probably need to be removed before the game will work.

I bought this computer so yes i have admin rights it's just it's an AMD card and any time i've tried to update it it gives me a BSOD and i've contacted ATI and AMD themselves about it and they never answered me back so i gave up.

Also how do i remove those other two problems

And i will say it again it's not my drivers because i bought this computer 3 years ago as is and i have never upgraded anything on it yet. X3: reunion was working just 2 days ago. SO you have to rule out the drivers because if the drivers were the issue this would've happened as soon as i tried to play it the first time.

Being the person who bought the computer doesn't give you admin rights. That depends on how you've set up the user account(s). And if you get a BSOD trying to update drivers then that's a pretty sure sign that there is something wrong, which could affect your ability to run applications, especially games. I suggest you get some proper help with sorting this out, regardless of whether we manage to solve the problem you are having with X3.

Removing the CyberLink codecs is usually as simple as removing the software they came with. This is usually called PowerDVD. If you use it then you may be able to uninstall and then reinstall omitting the components that install the codecs. The MainConcept codecs may well be listed under that name in the list of Programs and Features, in which case you can simply uninstall those too. You may also have installed them as part of a codec pack, in which case you'd need to remove that.

Anything updated, I'm thinking anti-virus and the like, I known a recent F-Secure update caused some problems.

i've never been able to update the drivers since i got my computer because i tried to the day after i got it and nothing. secondly i never have ever downloaded powerDVD. I haven't done any changes to the game since i downloaded it and i haven't downloaded anything new nor updated my virus software yet so all these problems that could be causing it make no sense

Not being able to update drivers is a serious problem, and one that you should get sorted out. You can expect more problems if you don't.

As for PowerDVD, it quite often comes pre-installed on a PC. Whether you have it installed or not, you do still have the CyberLink codecs. If you can't find PowerDVD in your list of of installed programs then you will have to see if you can find something else that might have installed them; I have no idea what that might be, but I do know that they can cause problems with the game. The same applies to the MainConcept codecs.

As for not having made any changes, we are talking about any changes to your PC's configuration, not you making changes to the game. Such changes could be as simple as installing some other piece of software, even a game, that happens to come with some codecs. Whether you did so intentionally or not something has clearly changed on your PC, otherwise the game wouldn't have stopped working.

Finally, one other thing to try in case the problem turns out to be a file becoming corrupted on your hard disk, is a Steam file verification. Right click on the game you are trying to play in the Steam client, choose Properties, go to the Local Files tab, and click on Verify Integrity of Game Cache. It can take some time to run.

First and for most i know it's a serious problem but i have no way of fixing the issue with the drivers. Secondly, i have never made any changes to my PC at all. Third, i've done re-installing it and steam verification both never worked. Fourth, how would i find what's got those two codecs in it because i never have time or patience to find anything that small.

Clearly you have made changes to your PC of the kind we are talking about because you have installed Steam and X3, and it seems pretty unlikely that those are the only pieces of software on it. Once again, anything you have installed could be relevant.

As for finding the codecs, I'm afraid I can't help you much more with this. You need to go to Control Panel and choose Programs and Features, and then look down the list of applications there to find something, anything, that mentions CyberLink and/or codecs. It is possible to remove codecs manually, but that involves finding the files and editing the registry, and I'm not sure that's a good thing for you to be attempting under the circumstances.

so you're saying that anything from before or after downloading X3 When I JUST GOT IT 2 days ago would be affecting it? I'm sorry but apparently you don't understand let me put it plain as day to you......

I JUST GOT IT 2 DAYS AGO........IT WAS WORKING THE DAY I GOT IT.........there's no way it's my drivers, no way any changes would be casuing it....BECAAAAAUUUUSSSSEEEEE If it was all that THE GAME WOULD NOT HAVE FUNCTIONED THE DAY I GOT IT.

I'm sorry if you take this as hostile but i'm not happy because you all are repeating stuff i can 100% rule out and i'm frustrated as to why it could work one day and not work the next

I'm just trying to identify possible reasons why your game won't work. Let's take this step by step.

1. The game ran fine when you downloaded it.
2. Suddenly it doesn't work; the only way that could happen is if something on your PC changed to stop it working.
3. According to your DXDiag report there are several things installed on your PC which are known to cause problems with the game.
4. I have no way of knowing, other than from what you tell me, whether those things were there before you had problems with the game or not.
5. Your statement that you have never changed anything on your PC, which by definition cannot be true in the intended sense, leads me to believe that you may have made a relevant change without realising it.
6. I have been trying to provide you with what information I can to help you locate those things and remove them, to see if that helps.

If you are going to "100% rule out" all of the above then I'm afraid there is not really anything else I can suggest. As you said yourself, the game worked when you bought it, so unless we can identify what it is about your PC that has changed since then, we are not going to make much progress with solving the problem.

what i mean by changing is i haven't done any changes to my PC since i downloaded. I haven't downloaded anything new, i haven't updated anything that doesn't automatically do so that has to be updated.

OK, then that leaves us with very few possibilities:

1. One of those things that does automatically update broke it.
2. Something part of your PC has developed a fault.

Neither of those are things we can really help you with, which is another reason I was trying to eliminate the things we already know could cause problems.

At this point there are only really two options: either we give up and leave you to work out which of the above it is and find a solution, or we give the options I've already suggested a go in the hopes that it turns out to be something more easily solvable, in spite of the fact that it doesn't on the face of it appear to be likely. Of course there's a possibility it won't work and you'll be back to square one, but isn't it worth a try?.

Let's start by checking that list to see if we can find any candidates. Open up the list, take a few screenshots to cover the whole list, and then upload them somewhere. You can PM me the link if you don't want to post it in public. You can also type out the list if you prefer but that could be long-winded and error prone.
